Osprey Platform

The osprey platform is now complete, thanks to the generosity and hard work of many - both on and off the island.

Photographs by Nancy Somerville

The platform is near Duart Castle, in a position that is designed to avoid some of the traffic problems experienced when visitors stopped to view the white-tailed eagle nest along the approach road to Duart. The platform is not visible from the road; Duart Estate welcomes birders to use the castle car park and then walk to the viewpoint on the hill immediately south of the castle. On the seaward side of the car park a footpath leads off, turning south towards a gap in the wall. Once through this gap climb up between the gorse bushes to the trig point (concealed by the gorse). From here look due south and you will have a clear view of the platform. All we need now is the birds …

There are many people to thank

Firstly Duart Estate for having the platform on their land, and enabling viewing access; Pete Barron who came all the way from Cumbria to give us essential advice on location and construction; Billy McClymont for donating a pole; Mull Wind Power for erecting the platform; Mull Building Supplies for help with equipment, and of course the many Club members who have donated towards materials, plus those who have given their time and expertise (talking to landowners and building the platform). It has taken rather longer than planned, but now it is up can someone please tell the ospreys!
